UPDATE: March 2009 Letter to Members
The British Society of Baking was founded in 1955. A group of leading bakers and suppliers had attended a number of conferences of the American Society of Bakery Engineers in the US and decided there was scope to set up an organisation along similar lines in the UK.
Indeed the BSB was first constituted as the British Chapter affiliated to the American Society, before simplifying its name in 1978 to the British Society of Baking. It retains its links with both the American Society and another later formed organisation, the Australian Society of Baking, which dates back to 1971. The societies exchange publications and information, and can offer more direct help to one another's members by way of organising bakery visits, work experience and so on.
The primary purpose of the British Society of Baking is to provide a forum for learning more about the industry through conferences and associated events.
Members come from every sector of the baking industry - small craft and larger retail bakers, independent and group plant bakeries, supermarket groups, research organisations, the educational field, flour millers, ingredient and equipment suppliers.
Conference papers cover technical, legislative and marketing matters and there have been almost 400 presentations in all since the founding of the Society. Copies of most of these are available from the secretariat for those wishing to research particular subjects.
As expressed in the Creed, it's not all about hearing presentations from a conference platform.
Pre-conference dinners run alongside the Autumn Conference.
There is an annual BSB golf day held in the Spring. See below and click here for details of past and future BSB golf days.
The 2008 BSB Golf Day was held on Tuesday 29th April at the Belfry and played over the Brabazon Course and the 2009 BSB Golf day is being held on Tuesday 28th April and will also be played over the Brabazon course at the Belfry
In an effort to assist the exchange of information for members who cannot attend the Autumn Conference in person, a full text is reproduced in a high quality magazine format.
The BSB's Executive Committee and Conference Committee are striving to expand and improve the Society's range of services and will welcome comments and suggestions from members.
