Heygate & Sons ~ A Short History

For over 1,000 years there has been a mill at Bugbrooke Northamptonshire. The Heygate family has farmed in Northamptonshire since 1562 but it was not until the early 18th century that the family involvement in flour milling really began. The present business was started in 1900 by Mr. A. R. Heygate.

Now the business, under the direction of the descendants of Mr A. R. Heygate, is involved in flour milling, baking, feed milling and farming, employing over 750 people, with the site at Bugbrooke. first mentioned in the Domesday Book, an excellent example of the progress of milling technology. At the same time they have added to the business mills at Tring in Hertfordshire and Downham Market in Norfolk, giving them a flour production of over 4,500 tonnes per week and making them the UK’s largest independent country miller. However, the mills are no historic relics, various generations of the Heygates have guided their fortunes, added and improved, rebuilt and redesigned so that today they stand as a fine example of a skilled and traditional craft.

The mill at Tring was purchased from the family of the late William Mead in 1944. It has undergone a series of remodellings and now has a capacity of more than 10 tonnes of wheat per hour. It produces a full range of premium flours and is the focal point for all the company’s quality wholemeal bread flours.

The Downham Wiarket mill was purchased from the late Mr. F. A. Bird in 1958 and has been considerably remodelled over the years to meet the increasing demand for speciality flours. It too has a capacity of grinding 10 tonnes of wheat per hour, making biscuit flour, viscosity controlled flours, soft flours and speciality wheat products.

At Bugbrooke the Heygate family commissioned the building of a completely new flour mill in 1994 to meet the continuing demands of their customers. Their animal feed mill produces in excess of 2,000 tonnes each week, cormprising over 120 different rations to feed all classes of farm livestock, pheasants, horses and domestic pets. The emphasis is on a blend of traditional quality ingredients plus yeasts and other natural feed additives.

The completion of the "Sugarlac Plant" enables the production of high lactose feeds, unique to Heygates. which have been seen to promote healthier, more productive dairy animals. Further extensions over the last 10 years have included cereal processing and extra wheat and flour facilities for customised products

Recently the extension of their laboratory and the development of a test bakery which includes demonstration, training and conference facilities enables Heygates to address the challenging demands which the future will no doubt bring.
